Why has it become necessary for hotels to invest in technology in a post-COVID era?

By Alok Jha, MD & CEO, EaseVenture

The COVID-19 crisis has wreaked havoc on the global hospitality industry. After the pandemic era, people would become more cautious due to the effect of COVID. That is why technology should be put in place for the safety of customers and to avoid physical contact as much as possible. It is high time to change the traditional way of hospitality by investing in technology. In our daily lives, technology plays a significant role. As technology advances, so does the planet.

There will be a greater need to accelerate and standardise the implementation process in the post-COVID era. In order to face these new challenges and sustain the hotel’s effectiveness, technology acts as a major factor. Everyone has started to change how they do business – from staff and partners to vendors and customers. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the hospitality industry to think ahead to safeguard the health of their workers. When staffs in the hotels engage with clients, clean rooms, serve customers, carry bags, or work in kitchens, the majority of staff members spend their shifts in high-risk environments. COVID-19 has resulted in a reorganisation of investments in technical innovation in the hospitality industry for a safer environment.

Technology has become a necessity in everyday life for everyone, from education to moving around a city. As the hospitality industry struggles hard to survive in the pandemic period, technology will become the most important tool in the post-COVID era to overcome obstacles and focus on development. People rely on smartphones, rather than carrying physical wallets. At the post-COVID times, investing in smarter technology options is the only way to maintain the track and growth of the hospitality industry.

Every hotel doesn’t need to follow a five-star international chain, but it is important to begin implementing the latest technology to maximise your overall revenue. Using the most up-to-date technologies and systems, hotels can collect relevant and high-quality data on time. Guest-facing technology has been recognised as a critical component in the future of the hospitality industry. The game-changing virus has brought the required essentials for hotels. Previously technology was considered a luxury, but now it has become vital to guest safety. Eliminating touchpoints like waiting at the front desk is the easiest way to make cautious travellers feel secure now and after the COVID era. This is where the need for mobile check-in and check-out tools have risen.

Technology has never been more relevant and it will play a critical role in the post-COVID recovery process. Hotel guests, like everyone else, want comfort. All should be simple and within arm’s reach for them for easy access. Many hotels have developed a Guest App that provides valuable information to guests such as nearby entertainment venues, medical facilities, restaurants, bars, and more.

Guests can also communicate with the hotel through SMS messages using Guest Messaging. Technology is important for effective communication, especially in the hospitality and tourism industries, where many companies are large and dispersed. Wi-Fi is no longer a luxury for hotel guests who travel with phones, tablets, and computers; it is now a must-have when they check-in at a hotel. Guests expect a seamless Wi-Fi network when they enter a hotel so that they can do all their business work without any interruption.

Smart room access systems are required for less contact, which enables guests to unlock their doors by swiping their phones across a keyless pad on the door. Technology will help in keeping the guests safe. If a hotel is running smart with sensors and voice-activated devices, it would result in less physical contact, thereby reducing any spread of infections. Also, smart energy managing systems will save more energy and guests will feel secure due to non-touch services. With a personalised Mobile App for hotels, casinos, resorts, and more, staff can communicate directly with guests before, during, and after their stay.

This would minimize the need for physical contact and protect the staffs from contaminations. Although investing in technology is an expenditure, it will be highly beneficial in the post-COVID era and can help in the growth of the hospitality industry on a high phase. Slowly, business can take flights with proper customer services. Upgrading to technology is the most preferred option to escape from the pandemic fears and gain customers. This will attract hotels to a wider audience and uplift the industry to a higher level.
