Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport unveils advanced baggage handling system ahead of Olympics

In anticipation of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, officials at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport have revealed a state-of-the-art security baggage system along with a specialised baggage handling area. The introduction of these enhancements aims to streamline operations and ensure heightened security measures during the upcoming global event.

The newly-implemented equipment features an upgraded scanner system, capable of conducting thorough scans of passengers’ baggage without necessitating the removal of electronic devices, aerosols, or liquids.

Edward Arkwright, CEO of Aéroports de Paris Group, emphasised the airport’s commitment to stringent security protocols, stating, “If we have doubts about a piece of luggage, the luggage won’t leave.”

As the primary gateway to the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, Charles de Gaulle Airport anticipates handling a substantial volume of baggage, including over 114,000 pieces from delegations and the media, along with an estimated 47,000 pieces of sports equipment.

To accommodate this influx, the airport has unveiled the “baggage factory,” a dedicated space spanning 10,000 square meters, designed specifically for processing athletic equipment and luggage.

Sébastien Malaussene, the Airport’s Project Meqanager, underscored the unique challenge posed by oversized luggage, particularly from athletes who travel with an array of sports equipment. He noted, “Athletes travel with all their sports equipment and they are not your average passenger bringing up to four, five bags. They have sports items, many of which are oversized.”

The unveiling of these advanced facilities and technologies underscores Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport’s proactive approach in ensuring seamless operations and top-tier security standards for the prestigious sporting event scheduled for 2024.
