Air India gains approval for in-house modifications

Air India has achieved a major milestone with its recent Design Organisation Approval (DOA) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) under CAR 21 approval guidelines. As the first airline in India to attain this level of authorisation, Air India now possesses the in-house capability to implement design modifications to its aircraft interiors, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and self-reliance.

The official approval was presented to Campbell Wilson, CEO, Air India. This achievement marks a significant step in Air India’s journey to bolster its internal engineering and maintenance capacities, aiming for a self-sustaining approach to fleet maintenance and modification. This shift towards internal capability aligns with India’s broader vision of empowering the domestic aviation sector.

In collaboration with Tata Technologies, a leader in engineering and digital services, Air India is focusing on delivering next-generation aircraft interiors that emphasise safety, functionality, and an improved passenger experience. Tata Technologies’ expertise will support Air India in incorporating state-of-the-art digital thread solutions and advanced Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services, thus reducing downtime and ensuring enhanced operational reliability.

With this DOA, Air India is poised to streamline its operational processes significantly, enabling a more responsive and customer-centric approach. This strategic move underscores Air India’s commitment to contributing to the Indian aviation sector’s growth while fostering an enhanced experience for travellers through technological advancements and increased autonomy in fleet maintenance and interior upgrades.
