The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) reported provisional whole-year visitor arrivals of 34 million in 2023, with four million visitors in December alone. The Mainland remained the primary visitor source market throughout the year, witnessing satisfactory arrivals during key holiday periods.
Southeast Asian markets showcased swift recovery, with December arrivals from the Philippines and Thailand surpassing pre-pandemic levels at 116% and 106%, respectively. The Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing, and Exhibitions (MICE) segment led the rebound, reaching about 70% of pre-pandemic levels and outpacing leisure travel in recovery.
Overnight visitors constituted half of the total travelers, with an average stay of 3.6 nights, longer than pre-pandemic levels. According to a tourism board survey, overnight visitor satisfaction reached 8.7 out of 10, exceeding pre-pandemic levels.
Dane Cheng, Executive Director of HKTB, highlighted the board’s efforts in reconnecting with global visitors through the “Hello Hong Kong” campaign. The campaign successfully projected Hong Kong’s normalcy and enhanced promotional activities aligned with post-pandemic travel behaviors.
Looking ahead, the HKTB aims to capitalize on global travel trends and consumer demand. Targeted promotions in various source markets, including initiatives focused on High-Speed Rail tourism, will be employed to boost traveler interest. Mega events will continue to be staged to maximize the tourism industry’s contribution to the overall economy, reaffirming Hong Kong’s position as a top international travel destination
