Yemenia Airways to resume flights from Sanaa to Cairo and India

Yemenia Airways is set to resume commercial flights from Yemen’s Sanaa to Egypt, and India starting Sunday evening, Yemen’s state news agency SABA said.

Return flights to Cairo will operate once daily, while flights to India will run twice weekly. The resumption in flights are part of an agreement between Saudi Arabia and Yemen aimed at calming hostilities in Yemen’s decade-old civil war.

The agreement included canceling all recent decisions and procedures against banks by both sides, resuming Yemenia Airways’ flights between Sanaa and Jordan, and operating flights to Cairo and India.
For over two years, Yemen has seen a de-escalation from a conflict that started in March 2015.

Flights between Sanaa and Cairo had been halted since late 2016.

‘27% increase in tourist numbers to Egypt in four months’

The total number of tourists visiting Egypt during the first four months of 2024 increased by 27 per cent, supported by inbound tourism from Arab countries, which witnessed a 54 per cent growth compared to the same period in 2023, according to Ghada Shalaby, Vice Minister for Tourism of Egypt.

In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Shalaby said during her participation in the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai yesterday that Egypt’s participation in the global event comes within the framework of the measures taken by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism to encourage more Arab tourist movement, especially from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

She expressed optimism about the tourism season in 2024, coinciding with Egyptian measures to support promotional programmes, facilitate tourist visas, and target new markets such as India, Australia, and Turkiye.

She noted the presence of nearly 70 Egyptian companies, as well as Egyptian investors and stakeholders in the tourism, aviation, hotel, and hospitality sectors, aiming to engage and explore future partnerships with their counterparts from the GCC countries and the Middle East while attracting more foreign investments from new markets worldwide. Egypt to privatise airport management

Egypt has initiated the executive process to privatise the management and operation of its airports, as announced in a Cabinet statement on Monday. The move is part of a broader strategy to transition the oversight of critical logistics and transportation entities to the private sector, with the aviation industry leading the way.

Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Abbas Helmy stated that Egypt is preparing to launch an international tender for the operation of its airports, including the major hub, Cairo International Airport. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly’s declaration in November 2023, outlining plans to extend private sector management to seaports, dry ports, and airports.

Madbouly emphasised a commitment to building partnerships with private entities for the stewardship and operational aspects of mass transit systems. The Egyptian Transport Ministry, in collaboration with global corporations, has formulated an integrated strategy to localise the industry.

Support for Egypt’s private sector and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) received a significant boost in July 2023, with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) providing USD 533.7 million. This funding aligns with Egypt’s broader privatisation and restructuring measures for the public sector.

As part of the Egypt 2022-2027 strategy launched by Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat in March 2022, the EBRD approved USD 400 million in development financing for the National Bank of Egypt. This support is specifically aimed at bolstering SMEs, with a focus on regional companies led or owned by young entrepreneurs. An additional USD 100 million was allocated to Banque Misr to enhance financing for SMEs, promoting inclusive and sustainable growth, particularly in areas with limited access to financial services.

The EBRD also granted funding of EUR 30.2 million (USD 33.7 million) for the Mediterrania Capital IV Fund, further contributing to Egypt’s efforts to strengthen its private sector and encourage economic growth.

4.9 million tourists visit Egypt in first six months of 2022

Some 4.9 million tourists visited Egypt in the first six months of 2022, an increase of 85.4 per cent compared to 2.6 million travellers in the same period of 2021, it was announced.

Marking World Tourism Day, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced on Tuesday that “eight million tourists visited Egypt in 2021, a 117.5-per cent increase compared to 3.7 million tourists in 2020”, reports Xinhua news agency.

Meanwhile, hotel occupancy during the first half of 2022 was 52.6 million nights, a 63.6 per cent increase compared to 32.2 million nights in the first half of 2021, it said.

“Rise in numbers of tourists visiting Egypt in 2021 and the first half of 2022 is a good indication of recovery after the COVID-19 that caused a sharp decline in numbers due to the policies of the lockdown imposed worldwide,” said Ashraf al-Sahah, Member of Egyptian Tourism Federation.

In 2019, tourism revenues hit a record high with USD 13.03 billion with the number of tourists reaching 13.1 million.
Also on Tuesday, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa said that the country aims at increasing the number of foreign tourists by 25 to 30 per cent annually and boosting its revenues.

“The tourism industry is one of the main pillars of the national economy, and it is linked with many complimentary industries and contributes to providing job opportunities directly and indirectly,” he said at an event at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, Cairo.

The Tourism Ministry plans to improve the quality of the tourism experience of every foreign tourist coming to Egypt, the investment environment in hotels and shopping malls, as well as the quality of services provided to tourists whether in airports, streets, or taxis, according to Issa.

He added that his Ministry will coordinate with the Aviation Ministry to increase the number of planes and the capacity of airports.

On Tuesday, most museums and archaeological sites, including the Giza Pyramids, were free for visitors to mark the day. (Source: IANS)
