Salt Lake City awarded 2034 Olympic host contract

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially awarded Salt Lake City, Utah, the host contract for the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. This marks a return of the Winter Games to Utah after 32 years and is the fifth time the United States will host the event. “The Olympics and Paralympics represent more than just competition; they embody community building and the celebration of excellence, which are hallmarks of Utah,” said Governor Cox. “With over 80% of Utahns and full support from our elected leaders, we are ready to host another Winter Games and eagerly anticipate welcoming the world back to Utah in 2034.”

Utah has maintained a robust Olympic legacy since hosting the Winter Games in 2002. The state has diligently preserved all Olympic venues, making it a critical training ground for both United States and international athletes. Athletes from over 30 nations regularly utilise Utah’s world-class facilities and training sites.

The 2002 Winter Games in Utah set attendance records, selling more than 1.5 million tickets and drawing over 70,000 fans daily, the highest attendance ever for a Winter Games. The event also achieved a record in ticket sales, selling a greater percentage of available tickets than any previous Winter or Summer Olympics. It attracted 2.1 billion viewers in 160 countries and territories, amassing 13.1 billion viewer hours. The Games had 22,000 volunteers and 2,399 athletes, cementing its reputation as one of the “most successful Games in history.”

The 2034 Winter Olympic Games in Utah aim to build on this legacy, reaching new levels of success and excitement. The Olympic Games are scheduled to take place from February 10-26, 2034, followed by the Paralympic Games from March 10-19, 2034. Utah is prepared, honored, and thrilled to host the Winter Games once again.
