According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) website as of May 3, the forthcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport has been designated with the three-letter location code ‘NMI’.
Upon conducting a search on the IATA platform, it was revealed that ‘NMI’ serves as the IATA code for Navi Mumbai’s DB Patil International Airport, while Mumbai’s current international airport retains the code ‘BOM’ as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSIA).
The airport code, also referred to as a location code, consists of three letters and is utilised to identify airports and urban areas globally, as outlined by the IATA.
In September of the preceding year, IATA assigned ‘DXN’ as the location code for the forthcoming Greater Noida international airport.
Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had stated in January that the Navi Mumbai airport is expected to commence operations by year-end. He mentioned, “The airport’s inaugural flight is scheduled for November or December. This development will catalyze significant growth in Navi Mumbai.” Additionally, he noted that over the next decade to fifteen years, at least ten cities are projected to host two airports each.
