Finnair sets bold climate commitment goals

Finnair has announced a new science-based target to reduce its carbon emissions intensity (CO2e/RTK) by 34.5% by 2033, using 2023 as a baseline. This target, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), translates to an approximate 13% reduction in absolute CO2e emissions. The airline aims to achieve this through significant investments in Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), improving operational efficiency, optimising its network, and updating its fleet.

Finnair’s CEO, Turkka Kuusisto, emphasised that while the path to achieving this target won’t be linear due to challenges related to SAF availability and cost, the airline is committed to making substantial progress. The company also revisited its long-term climate goal, now aligning with the industry’s objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, rather than its previous 2045 target. This shift reflects the need for a more stringent focus on reducing operational emissions rather than relying heavily on offsets.

Finnair’s commitment involves tracking and reporting progress annually in its sustainability reports, reinforcing its dedication to addressing climate challenges within the aviation sector.
