Dehradun set to become international airport, seeks direct flights to Kathmandu

In a significant development for Uttarakhand’s tourism industry, plans are underway to elevate Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport to international status. This transformation will be accompanied by the introduction of direct flights connecting Dehradun to Kathmandu, Nepal.

The state government, with backing from the Union government, has initiated the process by inviting proposals from airlines to operate subsidised flights on this route. The aim is to position India as a top destination for global tourists and enhance connectivity beyond just Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).

Interested parties can submit bids based on viability gap funding (VGF) per seat, with the state offering financial assistance. The absence of fare caps allows airlines to adjust prices according to market conditions, ensuring competitive pricing for travelers. The route will be awarded to airlines with a strong operational track record and a commitment to offering the lowest VGF.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed enthusiasm for establishing Dehradun as an international aviation hub. Beginning with flights to Kathmandu, this initiative is driven by the significant mutual interest and religious ties between the two destinations.

The move is expected to not only boost tourism but also facilitate commerce and cultural exchange between India and Nepal. It signifies a pivotal moment in Uttarakhand’s efforts to expand its global connectivity and attract visitors from around the world.
