Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi has announced the Indian Army’s achievements in transforming Jammu & Kashmir from a terrorism hotspot to a thriving tourism destination. Addressing an audience at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on the theme “Role and Contribution of Indian Army in Securing India’s Growth Story”, he highlighted the Army’s multifaceted role in national development and strategic growth.
The Army has introduced battlefield tourism, opening iconic locations such as Kargil and Galwan to visitors. This initiative allows civilians to experience these historic sites and pay homage to the soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation. The Army Adventure Wing has facilitated over 42 tourism expeditions in recent years by providing streamlined security clearances.
Gen Dwivedi revealed plans to boost border tourism, identifying 48 areas for targeted initiatives. Projects like the Trans-Himalayan Trek, the Soul of Steel Challenge in Uttarakhand, and public treks to the Siachen Glacier aim to increase footfall while creating local employment through skill development in mountaineering and related fields.
Infrastructure as a Pillar of Growth
Stressing the importance of infrastructure for sustainable development, Gen Dwivedi outlined the Army’s contributions across domains such as roads, bridges, power, telecom, water supply, health, and education in border areas. These efforts, he said, have laid the groundwork for long-term growth and stability.
Strategic Vision for 2047
The Army Chief emphasised security as a cornerstone for India’s sustainable progress, projecting the Army’s role as a key enabler for a “Progressive and Peaceful India” by 2047. He also highlighted the Army’s expanded global influence through UN peacekeeping missions and enhanced defence diplomacy.
Gen Dwivedi drew inspiration from past military leaders, particularly late General BC Joshi, and reiterated his commitment to a “decade of transformation” for the Indian Army under his leadership.
The address underscored the Army’s evolving role, from ensuring national security to contributing significantly to India’s economic and strategic development.
