The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, officially named the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, is anticipated to open by the end of 2024. Stretching 701 kilometers, this major infrastructure project will connect two of Maharashtra’s key cities, significantly reducing travel time between them. Currently, 625 kilometers of the expressway are operational, and the remaining 76 kilometers are expected to be completed by November.
This expressway features six lanes, with the potential to expand to eight in the future. It will pass through ten districts, enhancing connectivity across Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, and others. Notable features include several tunnels, including India’s widest tunnel at 17.5 meters, and the longest tunnel in Maharashtra at 8 kilometers, located in Igatpuri. These elements aim to facilitate efficient travel through challenging terrains.
The Samruddhi Mahamarg is not just about speed; it also promises economic growth by improving access to agricultural and industrial hubs in Maharashtra. The expressway is expected to foster trade, tourism, and local development, creating new opportunities along its route.
Once fully operational, travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur will be reduced to just eight hours, marking a significant improvement in regional transportation. With the completion of this and other major projects, including the Mumbai Metro 3 Phase I, the state is poised for a transformative boost in connectivity and infrastructure.
