In response to mounting cross-border tensions and emerging aerial threats, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has temporarily suspended pilgrimage to the sacred hilltop shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. The halt, which took effect Thursday evening, comes as part of a wider security clampdown across the Jammu region, now under high alert amid fears of further hostilities between India and Pakistan.
Officials have urged pilgrims to avoid any travel to the shrine until at least 5 a.m. tomorrow, emphasising the need for precautionary measures to ensure the safety of devotees. The suspension comes just as summer footfalls to the shrine typically surge, with thousands making the uphill trek daily.
“All pilgrims are requested to stay at designated shelters provided by the board,” said a senior Shrine Board official. “Enhanced security arrangements have been deployed on-site, and personnel are actively coordinating with defence forces to maintain peace and order.”
Military Activity and Interceptions Escalate in Jammu
The security measures follow a significant escalation in military activity, particularly in Jammu and surrounding border areas. According to defence sources, at least eight missiles launched by Pakistan were intercepted on Thursday evening by India’s Air Defence Units, preventing damage to high-value civilian and military targets.
The intercepted missiles were aimed at key areas, including:
Satwari (Jammu Airport)
Samba
RS Pura
Arnia
All rockets were reportedly neutralized mid-air. Defence officials likened the tactic to those used by the Palestinian terror group Hamas, describing the weaponry as “cheap rockets” meant to instill fear and destabilize civilian zones. Intelligence reports also indicate recent coordination between Pakistan’s ISI and Hamas operatives in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, further raising alarm bells.
Surveillance Intensified, Drones Thwarted
Amid fears of hostile drone activity, security forces have intensified aerial surveillance and quick-response protocols along the western frontier. Several suspected drones have already been detected and neutralized, according to defence sources, who remain on high alert for any future incursions.
Local authorities have been asked to maintain strict vigilance for aerial threats, particularly around sensitive installations and religious congregations like the Vaishno Devi Yatra. “This is not just a military matter; it’s also about public safety during a volatile period,” one senior security officer stated.
Cooperation Urged Amid Crisis
Authorities are appealing for public cooperation and calm as the situation remains fluid. The Shrine Board has assured that all necessary facilities, including shelter, food, and medical support, are available for pilgrims currently halted along the route.
The Vaishno Devi shrine, one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in India, annually draws millions of visitors. Its temporary closure underscores the seriousness of the ongoing geopolitical conflict and the need for heightened caution during periods of potential escalation.
Note: Travellers and residents in the Jammu region are advised to stay updated through official bulletins and adhere strictly to security instructions issued by local authorities and defence personnel.
