Stakeholders in Ladakh have passed a joint resolution calling for “restricted external investment” with strong local participation in the tourism sector. The move reflects growing concerns about protecting local livelihoods and maintaining the region’s unique identity.
The resolution was adopted by the Ladakh Tourist Trade Alliance, which represents multiple organisations in Leh. It emphasised that any concerns around outside investments should be addressed through lawful dialogue and coordinated efforts by local communities and trade bodies.
Over the years, Ladakh’s tourism ecosystem has been built largely by local residents despite geographical and environmental challenges. This includes hotels, guest houses, transport services, and adventure tourism, all contributing significantly to the regional economy.
However, the alliance warned of increasing pressure from large external businesses seeking to enter and dominate the market. Such developments are seen as a potential threat to both the fragile environment and the limited economic opportunities available to locals.
Meanwhile, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk received a warm welcome in Kargil after his release from detention. His presence has further amplified discussions around sustainable development and local rights in the region.
The resolution stresses that unregulated external investment could displace local stakeholders, disrupt traditional livelihoods, and harm Ladakh’s socio-economic balance. Going forward, the focus will be on preserving the region through community-led initiatives and policy advocacy.
