Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh recorded 4.70 lakh tourist visits between January and June 2025, surpassing the 4.6 lakh arrivals during the same period last year. Despite a slowdown in May due to Operation Sindoor, June saw a rebound with 1,17,709 visitors, up from 1 lakh in June 2024.
The dip in May tourism was attributed to safety concerns, temporary airport closures, and travel reluctance, which even led hoteliers to offer discounts. Officials stressed that safety and security remain top priorities for attracting visitors. “Even a slight disturbance discourages tourists,” said tourism officer Vinay Dhiman.
Domestic tourist numbers have risen overall, while foreign arrivals slightly declined. The previous year saw higher foreign numbers due to the India–England Test match in March 2024. Major events like cricket matches often boost tourism in Dharamshala and surrounding areas.
Kangra’s attractions include Dharamshala’s Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium, renowned for its scenic beauty, Bir Billing—India’s paragliding capital—and McLeodganj, home to the 14th Dalai Lama. These sites draw both adventure seekers and cultural tourists.
With last year’s total at around 8 lakh visitors, officials expect 2025 arrivals to cross the 10-lakh mark. The upward trend until June suggests a strong year ahead for the district’s tourism industry.
