Maharashtra has achieved a remarkable environmental milestone as five of its beaches—Shrivardhan and Nagaon in Raigad, Parnaka in Palghar, and Guhagar and Ladghar in Ratnagiri—have received the internationally acclaimed Blue Flag certification. This achievement was proudly announced by Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare, marking a significant step in the state’s efforts to promote sustainable and responsible coastal tourism.
The Blue Flag certification is granted by Denmark’s Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and is recognised globally as a symbol of cleanliness, beauty, and sustainability. To qualify, beaches must meet 33 rigorous criteria, ranging from environmental management and safety standards to water quality and accessibility. The recognition confirms Maharashtra’s commitment to maintaining world-class coastal destinations that prioritise both environmental care and visitor satisfaction.
Each certified beach underwent a detailed evaluation process that examined waste management systems, safety measures, sanitation, and the quality of public amenities. The implementation of eco-friendly initiatives such as waste segregation, renewable energy use, and plastic reduction played a key role in achieving this honour. These measures ensure that tourism growth does not come at the cost of ecological balance or community well-being.
Beyond cleanliness, the Blue Flag initiative also focuses on environmental education and awareness. Locals and tourists are encouraged to participate in beach conservation activities, promoting responsible travel habits and respect for marine life. By adopting these practices, Maharashtra is setting a strong example for other Indian states to follow in preserving natural coastal resources.
Minister Aditi Tatkare emphasised that this recognition will not only attract more visitors but also enhance the livelihoods of coastal communities. She noted that the certification aligns with the state’s vision of making Maharashtra a leader in sustainable tourism and marine conservation. The achievement also strengthens India’s position on the global tourism map as an emerging eco-conscious destination.
With this recognition, Maharashtra joins an elite list of destinations that balance tourism, ecology, and community development. The Blue Flag status is expected to boost tourism infrastructure, international appeal, and environmental protection efforts, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the pristine beauty of the state’s beaches responsibly.
