The United Kingdom has introduced a fully digital eVisa system, replacing traditional visa vignette stickers placed inside passports. Under this new system, applicants no longer need to submit their passports while their visa decision is being processed, giving travellers greater flexibility and control over their international travel plans.
According to UK Visas and Immigration, more than 10 million people are already using secure eVisas. These digital visas are gradually replacing physical immigration documents such as biometric residence permits (BRPs) and passport stickers. Authorities confirmed that the rollout is in its final stages, with eVisas set to become the default proof of immigration status for most UK visa categories.
The transition to digital visas significantly improves customer convenience. Applicants can retain their passports during processing, allowing them to apply for visas to other countries simultaneously. This move supports smoother global travel planning and reduces administrative delays associated with document handling.
As the global visa service partner for UKVI, VFS Global will continue managing appointments and biometric enrolment at Visa Application Centres worldwide, supporting the digital transformation.
The eVisa process begins with completing an online application, followed by scheduling an appointment with VFS Global. Applicants visit the centre to submit documents and provide biometrics, after which they leave with their passport and await a decision via email.
Travellers must create a UKVI account to access their eVisa and verify all details before travelling. Once approved, the digital visa eliminates courier delays and allows entry to the UK with verified online status.
