Arunachal Pradesh is witnessing a surge in tourists as the snow-covered Sela Tunnel draws visitors eager to experience the region’s breathtaking winter landscape. Situated at 13,000 feet above sea level, the Sela Tunnel, comprising two separate tunnels, has become a major winter destination for travellers seeking a snowy retreat.
The North and South portals of the Sela Tunnel are currently blanketed in thick snow, offering visitors mesmerising views and single-digit temperatures that contrast sharply with the heat prevailing in other parts of the country. The snowfall across Tawang’s mountain ranges has transformed the region into a paradise for winter tourism.
With much of India experiencing warm and humid conditions, Tawang provides a refreshing escape with its crisp mountain air and snow-capped peaks. Tourists from states like Assam are particularly drawn to the contrast between the humid weather of Guwahati and the cool serenity of Tawang, located 450 km away.
MLA Namgey Tsering highlighted the importance of leveraging the region’s unique climate for tourism. “Weather plays a big role in attracting tourists to the Northeast. The chill in the air and the snow-capped mountains create the perfect setting for an adventurous journey to Tawang,” he said.
A tourist from Chirang, Assam, likened Tawang to Switzerland, praising its tranquil environment and stunning winter experience. “While Assam is experiencing hot, humid weather, Tawang remains cool with snowfall at various locations,” she said.
With its pollution-free environment, breathtaking landscapes, and favorable climate, Tawang remains a top travel destination in Northeast India, offering a perfect mix of peace and adventure for tourists.
