Mumbai’s suburban local trains are set for a major transformation, with all coaches soon to be upgraded to “Metro-style” air-conditioned compartments featuring closed doors. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced this significant development in the state legislative assembly, emphasizing that there would be no fare hike for commuters. These newly built coaches, not retrofitted ones, aim to enhance passenger comfort and safety by addressing the long-standing issue of overcrowding and open-door accidents on local trains.
The move comes in response to increasing concerns about commuter safety, especially after the tragic Mumbra train incident in June, which claimed five lives. Fadnavis highlighted the stark contrast between the safety of Mumbai Metro trains, which feature enclosed, air-conditioned coaches, and the dangers of traditional local trains. He confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw were approached with the request for these upgraded coaches, and Vaishnaw has expressed support, with a formal announcement expected soon.
In addition to the rail upgrade, Fadnavis provided updates on key infrastructure projects. The Colaba-BKC-Aarey Metro 3 line is expected to be fully operational by October, and the long-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport is slated for completion by the end of September. Plans are also underway for an “Education City” in Navi Mumbai, which will host foreign universities and offer courses at one-fourth the cost of overseas education. The CM also highlighted progress on the Vadhavan Port, projected to be one of the top ten ports globally.
Fadnavis dismissed opposition claims about a “honeytrap” targeting officials, citing lack of evidence. He further noted a 6.75% decline in Maharashtra’s crime rate and improvements in cybercrime detection and conviction rates for women’s safety cases. More than 2,000 arrests have been made in drug-related crimes, and 13 policemen have been dismissed. With new laws enforcing quicker investigations and a stronger focus on forensic evidence, the state aims to ensure timely justice and improved law enforcement across Maharashtra.
