The Maharashtra cabinet has approved a 105-kilometre freight corridor connecting Vadhavan port in Palghar with the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway at Bharveer in Nashik. The project aims to improve cargo movement between the international transshipment port and the central parts of Maharashtra. Undertaken by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), this project is expected to be completed in three years and will play a key role in strengthening infrastructure and logistics across the region.
To finance the project, a loan of INR 1,500 crore will be raised from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO), with an additional provision of INR 2,529 crore cleared by the cabinet. This new freight corridor will help move cargo from the Vadhavan port to other parts of the country faster and at a reduced cost. The Vadhavan Port Project Ltd is leading the development of the port, which is expected to be a major hub for international sea transport.
Currently, the route from the Samruddhi Expressway to Vadhavan port requires detouring through Bharveer-Amane to reach the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway, adding an unnecessary 82 km to the journey. With the new corridor, the distance will reduce to 104.9 km from 183.48 km, cutting travel time from over four hours to just about one to one-and-a-half hours. This drastic reduction in distance and time will lead to significant cost savings for transporters and industries dependent on freight logistics.
The corridor will pass through several talukas, including Dahanu, Vikramgad, Jawhar, Mokhada in Palghar, and Trimbakeshwar and Igatpuri in Nashik. These areas, which are rich in agriculture and local industry, will benefit immensely from faster and more reliable transport access. The improved connectivity is expected to stimulate local economies by boosting trade, manufacturing, education, and IT services in these regions.
Overall, the new freight corridor opens the door to massive economic opportunities for Nashik and Palghar districts. With quicker transportation, better access to markets, and reduced costs, small, medium, and large businesses in the region are expected to grow. The project promises new employment opportunities and better infrastructure, encouraging balanced regional development and transforming these districts into important industrial and logistics hubs.
