Amid heightened security concerns, the Jammu and Kashmir government has temporarily closed 48 of the 87 tourist destinations across the Valley, including popular spots like Yousmarg, Doodpathri, Sinthan Top, and Verinag Garden. Authorities confirmed that these closures are preventive and location-specific, while the remaining destinations continue to operate under tight security cover. The decision follows a series of security incidents and is aimed at ensuring visitor safety across the region.
The impact on tourism has been immediate. Srinagar International Airport reported a significant drop in passenger traffic starting April 23. From over 17,000 travellers that day, the number steadily declined in subsequent days, with April 26 recording just under 15,000 passengers. While the number of flights has remained relatively stable, the overall load factor has fallen, indicating decreased travel interest amid safety concerns.
Simultaneously, Srinagar Police continue their intensified crackdown on suspected terrorist networks. On April 27 alone, 34 residences were searched across the city as part of an ongoing investigation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Over 1,000 searches have now been conducted in Kashmir, focusing on disrupting terror-linked infrastructure and collecting digital and physical evidence.
According to police, all actions are conducted lawfully, with proper documentation and oversight. The force remains firm in its stance that any individual aiding or abetting terrorist activities will face legal consequences. With tensions running high and tourism under strain, security agencies are doubling down on efforts to restore stability and public confidence in the region.
