The Gujarat government has begun land acquisition for two new greenfield airports in Dahod and Dwarka, marking a significant step in strengthening the state’s aviation network. This initiative comes after detailed feasibility studies conducted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), which confirmed both sites as suitable for future development.
At Dahod, pre-feasibility studies revealed strong potential for regional connectivity. The project is designed to serve the industrial belt of eastern Gujarat, reducing reliance on Indore and Ahmedabad airports. While exact land details remain undisclosed, the state confirmed acquisition work is progressing to secure the required parcels.
In Dwarka, authorities have identified nearly 300 hectares near Vasai village, about 12 km from the city, for the new airport. Roughly 45% of this land is government-owned, with the rest being acquired from private holders. The project gained traction after earlier efforts were stalled due to coastal and defense restrictions.
Dwarka’s significance as a pilgrimage and tourism hub makes the project especially valuable. The airport will cut travel time for visitors from Ahmedabad and Mumbai, where current train journeys can take between eight and seventeen hours. Its strategic location near the Arabian Sea also adds potential defense and logistical benefits, enhancing its dual civilian and strategic importance.
These projects form part of Gujarat’s broader aviation roadmap, which also includes Dholera International Airport, scheduled for completion in December 2025. Other feasible sites identified by AAI include Morbi, Dhordo, and Rajpipla. The state is simultaneously working on expanding existing airports like Keshod in Junagadh, where 205 acres of land have already been acquired.
By pursuing greenfield projects and expanding existing airstrips, Gujarat aims to position itself as a leading aviation hub in western India. Improved air connectivity is expected to boost tourism, support industrial growth, and strengthen regional development, aligning with the state’s long-term economic and strategic vision.
