At the Business Standard Infrastructure Summit 2025, Noida International Airport CEO Christoph Schnellmann highlighted the strategic role of greenfield airports in strengthening India’s position as a global aviation hub. Unlike older airports constrained by legacy systems, greenfield facilities are built from scratch with modern passenger processing technologies, self-service bag drops, and smoother transfers. Noida Airport, aiming to handle 70 million passengers in the next two decades, is focusing on making travel quick, easy, and digitally supported.
The first operational phase will prioritise domestic and international transfers with safety as a key focus. Schnellmann stressed that industry-wide cooperation is vital for India to compete globally, and that passenger experience will be the ultimate measure of success. The goal is to make transfers quicker, easier, and more premium for those seeking luxury travel.
Greenfield airports like Noida’s Jewar project are developed on undeveloped land to reduce congestion in urban airports, minimise environmental impact, and enable sustainable growth. The Greenfield Airports Policy of 2008 outlines a two-stage approval process for such projects. With rising air travel demand, these modern hubs are poised to ease capacity pressures and support India’s long-term aviation ambitions.
