Dubai has taken a bold leap into the future with the successful test flight of a fully electric aerial taxi, marking a major milestone in the city’s transportation ambitions. Developed by Joby Aviation in partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the sleek eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft is capable of flying at speeds of 320 km/h with a range of 160 km, offering rapid and quiet transit across the city.
The test was conducted in the desert and showcased the aircraft’s smooth take-off and landing with near-silent operation—reflecting its promise as a zero-emission solution to urban congestion. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, hailed the flight as a “turning point,” emphasising Dubai’s commitment to embracing breakthrough technology that enhances quality of life and urban development.
Commercial operations of these aerial taxis are expected to begin by 2026, with vertiports initially located at high-traffic zones like Dubai International Airport. The aircraft is designed for intra-city travel and could reduce a 45-minute car ride to just 12 minutes, connecting key destinations like Palm Jumeirah with unprecedented speed and ease.
Dubai’s ambitious plan fits within the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to establish the emirate as a global leader in advanced mobility technologies. Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s Director General, and JoeBen Bevirt, CEO, Joby Aviation, see this as a foundational step toward a cleaner, faster, and smarter transportation future—beginning in Dubai, but ready for the world.
