SpiceJet has announced plans to expand its operational fleet by adding ten aircraft by the coming month. The first induction is scheduled for October 10, marking the start of a phased rollout aimed at boosting capacity in response to rising travel demand.
Out of the ten, seven aircraft will be leased from lessors, while three previously grounded planes will be restored to service. Agreements for the leased aircraft have already been finalised, ensuring timely delivery and deployment. Two of these aircraft have already arrived in India and are ready for immediate induction.
Currently, SpiceJet has 19 aircraft in active service, while 36 remain grounded. The addition of ten more planes will significantly enhance the airline’s ability to handle higher passenger volumes and improve route efficiency, particularly during peak travel periods.
This expansion comes shortly after SpiceJet secured INR 3,000 crore through a qualified institutional placement, followed by an additional INR 736 crore from an earlier funding round. The capital infusion strengthens the airline’s financial position and provides resources to support both fleet and operational growth.
SpiceJet has outlined November 15 as the target date for the full induction of all seven leased aircraft, with the grounded planes re-entering service gradually. The move is expected to ease capacity constraints and reinforce the airline’s market position against larger competitors.
According to Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh, the expansion is critical for meeting rising demand and enhancing service reliability. He emphasised that the new aircraft will allow the airline to serve passengers better while maintaining momentum in its recovery and growth journey.
