Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has made an impressive debut, handling over 26,000 passengers within the first five days of operations. The strong opening performance highlights pent-up demand for an additional aviation hub serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Passenger traffic remained steady from day one, indicating positive acceptance among travellers and airlines alike.
Between December 25 and December 29, the airport recorded 12,431 arriving passengers and 13,590 departing passengers.
Weekend travel emergedas the busiest period, with more than 5,500 passengers each on Saturday and Sunday. During this time, NMIA successfully handled 162 scheduled air traffic movements, reflecting smooth operational coordination.
Currently, the airport connects Navi Mumbai to 13 major domestic cities, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Goa. These connections cater to both business and leisure travellers and help decongest Mumbai’s primary airport. Authorities have confirmed that more domestic destinations will be added in the coming weeks.
NMIA has been developed as a greenfield airport under a public-private partnership between Adani Airports Holdings Limited and CIDCO. In its initial phase, the airport is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually along with significant cargo capacity. This phased approach allows for scalable growth aligned with traffic demand.
Once fully completed, the airport will be capable of handling up to 90 million passengers per year. It will feature two parallel runways, modern terminals, and advanced cargo infrastructure. Sustainability is a core focus, with eco-friendly design elements and renewable energy integration.
With its strategic location and modern facilities, NMIA is expected to transform regional air connectivity and ease pressure on existing airports. The strong early passenger response signals confidence in the new hub, positioning it as a key driver of aviation growth in western India.
