Maldivian Tourism Minister Thouriq Ibrahim has lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the Maldives as historic and transformative for bilateral relations. As the first state visit by any foreign leader under President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, the trip has been hailed as a powerful gesture of friendship and a fresh chapter in people-to-people ties between India and the Maldives.
In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Ibrahim emphasised that the relationship between the two countries goes beyond diplomacy, underscoring shared cultural and tourism interests. India currently ranks as the sixth-largest source market for Maldivian tourism, with over 130,000 Indian tourists recorded last year. With increased collaboration and outreach, the minister expects this number to grow to 200,000 this year.
To meet this rising demand, the Maldives is enhancing air connectivity from major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Lucknow, while also tailoring tourism experiences specifically for Indian travellers. The government is focused on making travel seamless and attractive for Indian tourists, recognising their vital contribution to the Maldivian economy.
Ibrahim also credited Bollywood for helping put Maldives on the global tourism map. Bollywood celebrities often vacation in the Maldives, amplifying its appeal. To formalise this relationship, Katrina Kaif has been appointed as the official brand ambassador for Maldivian tourism. Her influence and upcoming promotional campaigns across major Indian cities are expected to significantly drive tourist traffic from India.
Looking ahead, the Maldives is optimistic about deepening cultural, commercial, and tourism ties with India. Celebrity partnerships, government cooperation, and infrastructural expansion all signal a shared commitment to mutual growth. As Ibrahim noted, this visit isn’t just about diplomacy—it’s about strengthening a longstanding friendship built on trust, tourism, and cultural connection.
