The Government of Mizoram’s Department of Tourism has signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to boost tourism in the state. The agreement, formalised in Aizawl, marks a major milestone in Mizoram’s efforts to position itself as a prominent tourist destination in Northeast India. The MoU was signed by Lalthakimi Pachuau, Joint Director of Tourism, and RN Ranmung, Chief Regional Manager of IRCTC, Guwahati.
Under this collaboration, both parties will focus on joint promotional campaigns, streamlined travel logistics, curated itineraries, and initiatives to attract more tourists. The partnership combines IRCTC’s national tourism management expertise with Mizoram’s unique cultural and natural appeal, aiming to enhance the state’s visibility and accessibility.
The timing is strategic, as a new railway line is expected to connect Aizawl by September 2025. To leverage this development, IRCTC plans to launch a Special Tourist Train to Mizoram in October, offering travellers direct access to the state’s attractions. This is expected to significantly increase tourist arrivals during the upcoming peak season.
In addition to promoting inbound tourism, the MoU also includes affordable outbound tour packages for Mizoram residents, enabling them to explore destinations across India. This dual approach supports both local travel opportunities and the state’s economic growth through tourism.
Officials expect the partnership to create jobs, promote sustainable tourism, and encourage cultural exchange. By improving infrastructure and travel options, Mizoram aims to strengthen its place on both the national and international tourism map.
The move has been welcomed by tourism stakeholders and local communities, who see it as a transformative step towards long-term growth. With improved connectivity, structured marketing, and IRCTC’s operational support, Mizoram is set to attract a wider audience of domestic and international travellers.
