India’s Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has signed a non-commercial MoU with Netflix to globally showcase the country’s most stunning destinations through cinematic storytelling. This partnership aims to highlight India’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and historical richness in visually compelling ways. By featuring diverse landscapes and iconic locations on a global platform, the initiative positions India as a vibrant, must-visit travel destination for international audiences.
Through this collaboration, Netflix will help promote scenic locations, cultural landmarks, and heritage sites across different states, including Gujarat. The idea is to leverage the global appeal of high-quality visual content to inspire travel interest. The government believes that on-screen representation has the power to influence traveler choices, making this partnership a strategic step toward elevating India’s global tourism footprint.
The Tourism Minister confirmed the details of the MoU in Parliament, emphasizing that the partnership is aimed purely at promotion and does not involve commercial transactions. By showcasing local stories and picturesque settings, the initiative hopes to strengthen India’s soft power and boost foreign tourist arrivals. Such visibility can improve awareness of India’s lesser-known destinations and create stronger global recall for Indian tourism.
In addition to international promotion, the government is also focusing on strengthening rural tourism. Rural homestays have been a major part of this effort, offering visitors authentic local experiences while supporting community livelihoods. The Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PMJUGA) includes a plan to develop 1,000 homestays in tribal areas to boost employment and community-based tourism.
Under this scheme, states can receive up to ₹5 crore to support 5–10 homestays per village in clusters of 5–6 villages. This model ensures local income generation while offering travelers immersive cultural stays. The initiative not only improves rural hospitality infrastructure but also helps preserve traditional lifestyles, crafts, and customs by bringing responsible tourism directly to local communities.
As states and Union Territories continue to promote homestays, the combined push of global storytelling and rural development signals a broader shift in India’s tourism strategy. By merging cinematic visibility with grassroots empowerment, India is positioning itself as a diverse, inclusive, and culturally rich destination ready to welcome travelers from around the world.
