Harbhajan Singh, Rajya Sabha MP and former Indian off-spinner, met Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu to press for the expansion of Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport.
During the meeting, Harbhajan highlighted the growing passenger demand from Punjab and the need to enhance international connectivity from Amritsar. He emphasised that expanding infrastructure, increasing flight frequencies, and attracting more international routes would significantly benefit the region’s economy, tourism sector, and the Punjabi diaspora.
Amritsar Airport serves as a key aviation gateway for northern India, particularly for religious tourism linked to the Golden Temple and for travellers visiting from the UK, Canada, and other countries with large Punjabi communities. However, stakeholders have long argued that the airport’s potential remains underutilised compared to its strategic location and passenger demand base.
The demand for expansion comes amid broader discussions around airport privatisation and infrastructure upgrades across India. Strengthening facilities at Amritsar could also support cargo movement, boost trade, and improve overall regional connectivity.
The Civil Aviation Ministry has been pushing airport modernisation and capacity enhancement as part of India’s long-term aviation growth strategy. The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape future decisions regarding route expansion, terminal upgrades, and operational capacity at Amritsar Airport.
