Air India and IndiGo have issued travel advisories after Iran closed its airspace amid rising geopolitical tensions and widespread anti-government protests. The airlines informed passengers that several international flights may face delays or cancellations as aircraft are being rerouted to ensure passenger and crew safety.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Air India said that due to the emerging situation in Iran and the subsequent closure of its airspace, flights overflying the region are now operating via alternate routes. The airline cautioned that this change in routing could lead to longer flight durations and delays.
Air India further stated that a few flights, where rerouting is not operationally feasible, have been cancelled. Passengers have been advised to check their flight status before travelling to the airport. The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and reiterated that safety remains its top priority.
IndiGo also confirmed that some of its international flights have been impacted by the closure of Iranian airspace. The airline noted that the situation is beyond its control and urged passengers to stay updated on flight status. IndiGo is offering flexible rebooking options and refunds to affected customers.
According to IndiGo, its teams are actively monitoring the situation and working to support passengers by providing the best possible alternatives. The airline emphasised its commitment to minimising disruption while maintaining operational safety.
Iran issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) late Wednesday night, closing its airspace to all flights except those operating to or from the country with special permission. The closure comes amid escalating tensions with the United States, ongoing mass protests in Iran, and reports of the US withdrawing personnel from its Middle East airbases.
