The Maharashtra government has selected five beaches across Raigad, Ratnagiri and Palghar districts for Blue Flag certification as part of its efforts to promote sustainable tourism and strengthen the state’s coastal tourism sector. The initiative is aligned with the government’s broader vision of developing environmentally responsible tourism destinations along the Konkan coastline.
According to Additional Chief Secretary (Tourism) Sanjay Khandare, the state is focusing on coastal development through sustainable tourism projects, adventure sports activities and eco-friendly beach infrastructure. The objective is to enhance the attractiveness of Maharashtra’s coastline for both domestic and international travellers.
The five beaches shortlisted for Blue Flag certification are Nagaon Beach and Shrivardhan Beach in Raigad district, Guhagar Beach and Ladghar Beach in Ratnagiri district, and Par Naka Dahanu Beach in Palghar district. Officials believe the recognition will help increase tourist arrivals and improve the global visibility of these destinations.
Blue Flag is a globally recognised eco-label awarded to beaches, marinas and boating tourism facilities that meet strict standards related to environmental management, cleanliness, safety, accessibility and sustainability. The certification promotes responsible tourism while encouraging environmental conservation and awareness.
The Tourism Department is currently obtaining the necessary approvals and clearances, including those from the Ministry of Environment. Officials expect the selected beaches to receive Blue Flag certification within the next four to five months if all required criteria are successfully met.
Under the Viksit Maharashtra framework, the government plans to expand the programme by seeking Blue Flag certification for three to four additional beaches every year. With an 878-kilometre coastline stretching from Palghar to Sindhudurg, Maharashtra aims to strengthen its position as a leading beach tourism destination while preserving the natural beauty and ecological balance of the Konkan Coast.
