Ebixcash Payment Solutions is making investments into Technology and AI-led development for digital transactions and security. T. C. Guruprasad, MD & CEO, Ebixcash Payment Solutions, spoke to TravelBiz Monitor about the growth of foreign exchange sector, and the digital adoption for payments in India.
Q. With over three decades of experience across payments, foreign exchange, and banking, how have you seen India’s financial services ecosystem evolve, and what opportunities do you believe lie ahead for the industry?
India’s financial services ecosystem has undergone a truly remarkable transformation over the past three decades. When I began my career, banking and foreign exchange were largely branch-led, paper-intensive, and dependent on manual processes. Over the years, we have seen the industry move from FERA to FEMA, from telex-based communication to SWIFT, from physical documentation to digital KYC, and now to a world of UPI, API-led banking, real-time digital payments, and digital public infrastructure.
Today, India is no longer merely adopting global financial innovations; it is creating them. Platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI, Account Aggregators, and India’s broader Digital Public Infrastructure have positioned the country as a global reference point for inclusive digital finance. The RBI has noted that India processes nearly 50% of all global real-time payments, which reflects the scale and maturity of India’s payments ecosystem.
Q. The payments landscape is becoming increasingly competitive with fintechs, banks, and digital-first players. How is EbixCash differentiating itself while continuing to scale its Payments and Forex business?
Competition in the payments and forex industry has certainly intensified, but I see this as a positive development. It has accelerated innovation, expanded customer choice, and pushed every serious player to become more efficient, transparent, and customer-focused.
Our differentiation lies in offering an integrated financial ecosystem rather than standalone products. We operate across payments, foreign exchange, domestic and international remittances, prepaid travel cards, travel services, treasury solutions, and digital financial platforms. This breadth allows us to serve customers across multiple needs through one trusted platform.
Unlike players that focus only on digital payments or only on foreign exchange, EbixCash has built one of India’s most comprehensive phygital payment and forex ecosystems. Our digital capabilities are supported by a large physical distribution network, including more than 126 branches and a presence across 24 international airports. This allows us to serve customers seamlessly across both digital and assisted channels.
Scale is another important differentiator. EbixCash is among India’s leading foreign exchange companies, facilitating a significant share of cash-to-cash inward remittances into India and outward remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme through the AD-II channel. Our payments business is supported by over 150,000 customer touchpoints across the country, giving us the ability to serve customers across urban, semi-urban, and rural India.
Behind the scenes, we continue to invest in treasury automation, API-based connectivity with banking partners, intelligent pricing engines, real-time liquidity management, and advanced compliance systems. These investments help us scale efficiently while maintaining strong governance and customer service standards.
Q. EbixCash’s phygital model combines digital platforms with an extensive physical distribution network. How does this approach help you serve customers more effectively, particularly in a diverse market like India?
India is one of the most diverse financial markets in the world. Our phygital model allows us to serve both segments effectively. Customers can initiate transactions digitally through our platforms and, wherever needed, access personalised assistance through our branch network, call centres, or airport counters. This gives customers flexibility, convenience, and confidence. We believe the future is not digital versus physical. The future is digital enhanced by human expertise, especially in financial services where trust, compliance, documentation, and customer guidance remain critical. That principle continues to shape our customer experience strategy.
Q. Technology is reshaping every aspect of financial services. How are AI, automation, and digital innovation helping EbixCash enhance customer experience while maintaining strong governance and compliance?
Technology today is no longer just an operational enabler; it is a strategic differentiator. For us, the objective is clear: simplify customer journeys, improve speed and accuracy, strengthen compliance, and build greater operational resilience.
Artificial Intelligence is helping us enhance document verification, customer onboarding, fraud detection, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring, AML surveillance, predictive analytics, and customer service. These capabilities reduce turnaround time, improve accuracy, and enable a more seamless customer experience.
Automation is equally important in treasury and operations. Real-time liquidity monitoring, intelligent pricing, automated reconciliation, settlement processing, and exception management allow us to operate with greater efficiency while improving control and risk management.
However, in financial services, innovation must always be balanced with governance. As a regulated financial institution, compliance is embedded into every technology initiative we undertake. We continue to invest in digital compliance platforms, automated regulatory reporting, cybersecurity frameworks, and intelligent monitoring systems to ensure that every transaction is processed securely and in line with applicable regulatory standards.
Q. Looking ahead, what is your vision for EbixCash’s Payments and Forex business, and what role do you see it playing in shaping India’s evolving digital financial ecosystem?
Our vision is to establish EbixCash as one of India’s most trusted and comprehensive payments and foreign exchange platforms, delivering secure, intelligent, and customer-centric financial services across domestic and international markets.
We are committed to supporting India’s digital transformation in alignment with RBI’s Payments Vision 2028 and the G20 Roadmap for Enhancing Cross-Border Payments.
Our focus is on building an integrated ecosystem that brings together payments, foreign exchange, travel cards, inward and outward remittances, treasury, and digital financial services through a single technology-driven platform.
Financial inclusion will remain central to our vision. By combining advanced technology with our nationwide distribution network, we aim to make sophisticated financial services accessible to customers across every part of India.
As India strengthens its position as one of the world’s leading digital economies, EbixCash aspires to play a defining role in shaping the future of cross-border payments and foreign exchange. Our ambition goes beyond business growth. We want to help build a globally connected financial ecosystem where international payments become as simple, secure, transparent, and near real-time as domestic transactions.
