The West Bengal government has announced plans to develop a “Himalayan Hill City” in North Bengal to strengthen connectivity between Siliguri and the hill towns of Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong and Mirik. The initiative aims to reduce developmental gaps between North and South Bengal while improving regional infrastructure and public services.
The announcement was made following an administrative meeting at Uttarkanya. Officials said the project will focus on upgrading tourism facilities, drinking water supply systems, civic amenities and transportation links between the hills and plains. The goal is to create a more integrated and accessible region for residents and visitors.
As part of the development plan, QR codes will be installed at households to improve service delivery and administration. The government also plans to construct housing projects and modern public toilets on government land, while improving sanitation facilities at key tourist destinations across the region.
The state government has sought details of development funds allocated during the previous administration and reiterated its commitment to delivering public services more efficiently. Authorities said the project will help strengthen local infrastructure while supporting economic growth and tourism development.
Officials have also directed police to intensify action against narcotics and ordered district administrations to prepare a list of major temples that attract large crowds. Additional measures include biometric attendance for sanitation workers and investigations into allegations of illegal construction and encroachment, supporting the region’s broader development agenda.
