Uber has introduced a unique service, Uber Shikara, on Dal Lake in Srinagar, blending traditional Kashmiri heritage with modern convenience. The service allows locals and tourists to book shikara rides directly via the Uber app, marking the company’s foray into eco-tourism and heritage transportation in Jammu and Kashmir. This innovative initiative highlights Uber’s efforts to modernise local tourism while preserving cultural authenticity.
The service is designed to boost tourism by providing affordable, hassle-free access to Dal Lake, one of Kashmir’s most iconic destinations. With integrated safety measures and digital payment options, Uber Shikara ensures a smooth and memorable experience. By collaborating with local shikara owners, the service supports sustainable livelihoods and promotes environmentally conscious travel.
Uber has partnered with seven local shikara operators, ensuring government-regulated pricing to offer fair rates for tourists. Shikaras are stationed at Nehru Park, and operators retain 100% of the fares as Uber refrains from charging fees. Plans are underway to expand the fleet based on growing demand, further benefiting the local community.
Each shikara ride lasts one hour and can accommodate up to four passengers. Operating between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., bookings can be made 12 hours to 15 days in advance, offering convenience and flexibility for travellers. The service combines traditional charm with modern convenience, making it a standout addition to Srinagar’s tourism landscape.
With Uber’s cab services already present in Srinagar, the addition of Uber Shikara aims to revolutionise the tourist experience on Dal Lake. By introducing this service, Uber enhances the accessibility and enjoyment of one of India’s most picturesque attractions, cementing its commitment to innovation and community-focused tourism.
