Thomas Cook (India) Limited, in collaboration with the Uttarakhand Government, launched the Green Games initiative at the National Games 2025, marking a significant step toward sustainability in Indian sports. As part of this initiative, over 1,600 Rudraksha trees were planted at a dedicated 2.77-hectare Sports Forest (Khel Van) near Maharana Pratap Sports College. Additionally, Gulmohar tree seeds were distributed to athletes, encouraging them to extend the green mission to their home states, making this a nationwide movement.
This initiative was driven by the vision of the Uttarakhand Government, the Indian Olympic Association, and other key stakeholders. The Oasis – The Oberai School students have taken on the responsibility of maintaining the planted trees, ensuring the initiative’s long-term impact. The Rudraksha tree, known for its spiritual and medicinal significance, thrives in Uttarakhand, while the Gulmohar tree, renowned for its adaptability, strengthens soil and provides shade across diverse terrains. The project highlights the commitment of sports and environmental conservation coming together for a greener future.
The launch event, held on February 12, 2025, saw participation from notable dignitaries, including Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal, and Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha. The initiative was further recognised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the opening ceremony, reinforcing its significance in fostering ecological awareness. Thomas Cook India’s role as the official ACT (accommodation, catering, and transport) partner ensured seamless management of over 20,000 participants, including athletes, support staff, and dignitaries.
Rajeev Kale, President & Country Head, Holidays, MICE, Visa – Thomas Cook (India) Limited, emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating that this initiative transforms every athlete into an ambassador for India’s green future.
