Sabah is emerging as a popular travel destination for Indian tourists, thanks to its rich cultural heritage, adventure opportunities, and natural beauty. However, tourism officials believe that greater visibility and improved connectivity are important to further increasing footfall from India.
Speaking on this, a Sabah tourism representative emphasised the need for enhanced awareness campaigns in India. “India is a vast market, and over the years, awareness about the beauty of Sabah has grown. We are now actively promoting culture, adventure, and nature to Indian travellers,” said Julinus Jeffery Jimit, CEO, Sabah Tourism Board.
One of the biggest challenges remains the lack of direct flight connectivity from India to Sabah. Officials expressed hope that this issue will be resolved in the coming months or years, making travel more convenient for Indian tourists.
Currently, Sabah receives an average of 900 to 1,000 Indian visitors per month, many of whom are drawn to the region’s diverse wildlife, bird-watching opportunities, and nature-based experiences.
Given Malaysia’s longstanding ties with India and its significant Indian diaspora, efforts are also being made to introduce cultural programmes tailored for Indian travellers. With over 35 registered ethnic groups and nearly 80 languages spoken in Sabah, tourism authorities believe that Indian visitors can enjoy a unique cultural exchange.
With increased promotions and potential improvements in air connectivity, Sabah is positioning itself as a key destination for Indian travellers seeking adventure, culture, and natural beauty.
