Pune Airport renamed to Sant Tukaram Maharaj Airport

The Maharashtra Assembly has passed a resolution to rename Pune’s Lohegaon Airport as ‘Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Airport.’ Proposed by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar under Rule 110, the resolution aims to honor the revered 17th-century saint and spiritual leader.

The resolution, approved by the Maharashtra Cabinet, will now be forwarded to the Civil Aviation Ministry for final approval. The renaming reflects the state’s effort to celebrate its cultural heritage and pay tribute to one of its most iconic figures.

Sant Tukaram Maharaj is widely revered for his spiritual contributions and teachings that resonate with millions. Renaming the airport in his honor is seen as a symbolic gesture to acknowledge his legacy while fostering pride in Maharashtra’s cultural roots.

Once cleared by the Centre, the renaming is expected to give Pune’s airport a distinctive identity, highlighting the region’s rich history while connecting travellers to its cultural significance.

Air India Express has been adding new destinations to its route network.

Air India Express to connect Mangaluru with Singapore & Pune from Jan

In a significant boost to international connectivity, Air India Express has announced the launch of direct flights between Mangaluru and Singapore starting January 21. This marks Singapore as the first international destination outside the West Asia region to be directly connected to Mangaluru.

Flight IX 862 will depart Mangaluru at 5:55 AM IST on Tuesdays and Fridays, arriving in Singapore at 1:25 PM local time. The return flight, IX 861, will depart Singapore at 2:25 PM local time on the same days, landing in Mangaluru at 4:55 PM IST.

In addition, the airline is expanding its domestic network with new direct flights to Pune and Delhi. Starting January 4, flights between Mangaluru and Pune will operate twice every Saturday:

  • IX 2256: Departs Mangaluru at 8:00 AM, arrives Pune at 9:25 AM.IX 2257:
  • Departs Pune at 9:55 AM, arrives Mangaluru at 11:40 AM.
  • IX 2236: Departs Mangaluru at 6:30 PM, arrives Pune at 8:00 PM.
  • IX 2237: Departs Pune at 8:35 PM, arrives Mangaluru at 10:05 PM.

From February 1, Air India Express will also commence daily flights between Mangaluru and Delhi.

  • IX 2768: Departs Mangaluru at 6:40 AM, arrives Delhi at 9:35 AM.
  • IX 1552: Departs Delhi at 6:40 AM, arrives Mangaluru at 9:35 AM.

The Mangaluru International Airport welcomed the announcement, emphasising that the new routes will enhance connectivity, support economic growth, and promote cultural exchange between the regions.

Air India Express to start flights to Bangkok from Surat & Pune on December 20

Air India Express will start flights to Bangkok from Surat and Pune from December 20, making Thailand’s capital its 15th international destination.

Besides, the Tata Group carrier will commence services to Dimapur (Nagaland) and Patna (Bihar).

With these new cities, the airline will be connecting a total of 51 cities across India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

“Operations to Bangkok will commence on 20th December 2024, with direct flights connecting Surat and Pune to the vibrant capital of Thailand. Additionally, the airline strengthens its domestic network with the launch of services to Dimapur and Patna, offering daily direct connectivity between Dimapur and Guwahati, and Patna and Bengaluru and Hyderabad,” the airline said in a release on Wednesday.

Air India Express, which completed the merger of AIX Connect with itself, is expanding its network.

With Bangkok as the 50th destination, Air India Express Managing Director Aloke Singh said the airline is rapidly expanding its presence in Southeast Asia.

The latest expansion of the network builds on the strategy of connecting non-metros to international destinations and Indian metros, promoting economic growth and tourism, he added.

Currently, the airline has a fleet of 90 planes and operates over 400 flights daily.

 

FLY91 to connect Solapur with Mumbai and Goa from Dec 23

FLY91 has added Solapur to its route network connecting it with Mumbai and Goa. The announcement of FLY91’s two new direct routes, Goa – Solapur and Mumbai – Solapur, takes the total number of domestic destinations connected by the regional airline, which is headquartered in Goa, to nine. The airline commenced operations in March 24.

FLY91 Airline’s flights will be operational on the two routes starting December 23, and tickets will be available for sale for the two routes over the next few days. The start of these flights will bring a reliable, safe and quick mode of transportation between these destinations.
This introduction of the two new direct routes reinforces the airline’s vision of improving regional connectivity, aligning with the Union Aviation Ministry’s UDAN scheme, which aims to enhance air travel accessibility and connectivity in underserved and remote areas.

“FLY91 is pleased to announce the two new direct routes. FLY91 will be the only airline providing direct connectivity between Mumbai, the country’s commercial capital and Solapur, renowned as a textile hub, a major centre of industry and a pilgrimage hub. Connecting with Goa will open up Goa as a conveniently reachable tourism destination for the residents of Solapur,” said Manoj Chacko, Managing Director and CEO of FLY91.

The commencement of FLY91 operations on the two new routes is expected to increase trade and tourism engagement, while also providing last-mile air connectivity to travellers frequenting the two centres and their respective outlying areas, the top official also said.
Based out of Manohar International Airport, Goa, FLY91 currently connects regional centres such as Mumbai, Pune, Jalgaon, Sindhudurg and Solapur in Maharashtra, as well as Agatti in Lakshadweep and cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

IndiGo to connect Pune with Dubai via direct flights from Nov 22

IndiGo is set to launch daily direct service from Pune to Dubai from November 22.

With this new addition by IndiGo, the airline will now operate 383 average weekly flights out of Pune offering direct connectivity to over 25 destinations in India and two international destinations, the Gurugram-headquartered airline said in a statement.

This new route will enhance IndiGo’s international network from Pune by providing direct connectivity to one of the most sought-after tourist and business destinations for Indian travellers in the UAE, it said.

The daily connectivity between Pune and Dubai will enhance accessibility between the two cities and introduce new avenues for business and job opportunities for travellers, IndiGo said.

“With the introduction of these flights, IndiGo will now operate over 100 weekly, direct, flights to Dubai from 13 cities in India, and now offers a wide choice of more than 225 weekly flights into the UAE from 18 cities in India,” said Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo.

The airline has already announced a flight to Bangkok from Pune.

FLY91 starts direct flights from Pune to Goa & Jalgaon

With an eye on the rise in travel activities around the festive season of Diwali, FLY91, India’s pure play regional airline, has announced direct daily flights connecting Pune-Goa and Pune-Jalgaon since yesterday, significantly enhancing regional connectivity on the two routes.

The introduction of daily flights on the two routes will not only enhance connectivity to Pune, the cultural capital of Maharashtra, a centre for IT and ITES services and an education hub, but will also offer convenient direct outbound air-travel options for Pune-based residents.

The Pune-Goa route will facilitate ease of travel for students, leisure seekers and promote MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) tourism in Goa, a leading holiday destination.

The Pune-Jalgaon route will increase business and student travel, along with leisure traffic drawn to the Ajanta and Ellora caves, UNESCO-endorsed world heritage sites in Jalgaon.

In addition to the above routes, FLY91 will continue to ply its aircraft on the Pune – Sindhudurg route, twice a week.
