SpiceJet to connect Shillong & Delhi with non-stop flights from Feb 24

SpiceJet will connect the north-eastern city of Shillong with Delhi by non-stop bi-weekly flights starting February 24, 2023. An agreement to this effect had been signed by SpiceJet and the Meghalaya Transport Corporation.

Shillong is an important regional hub with several central universities setting-up campuses in and around the city. It also houses important regional offices of the government of India. The rolling hills and natural scenic beauty has earned the sobriquet – Scotland of the East. The state also has famous tourist attractions such as the living roots bridge and Cherrapunji one of the wettest places in the world is also in the state.

Shilpa Bhatia, Chief Commercial Officer, SpiceJet, said, “We are excited to extend our network to Shillong. Meghalaya is one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the North East with magnificent landscape and scenic views and there is a tremendous potential for tourist traffic to the State. Non-stop flights providing hassle free connectivity will provide a major fillip to travel and tourism in the state.”

The airline will deploy its Q-400 aircraft on the route. Bookings are now open on www.spicejet.com, SpiceJet’s mobile app and through online travel portals and travel agents.

Scindia inaugurates three flights connecting five cities in the North-East

Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Minister of Civil Aviation, along with Gen. Dr Vijay Kumar Singh (Rtd.), MoS Civil Aviation, has inaugurated the operation of three flights connecting five cities of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram.

The enhanced aerial connectivity in the mountainous cities of the five states of north-eastern part of the country will play a vital role in creating the ease of living for the residents of region and boosting tourism and trade.

In his inaugural address, Scindia congratulated the people of the region and said that today is a very auspicious day that we have taken such a significant step in the direction of providing air connectivity to every part of the country.

The minister further said that Union Government has given special emphasis on the air connectivity for the north-eastern region. In the last eight years, seven airports have been developed in the region. Under UDAN scheme, 14% routes have been awarded to the north-east. Under UDAN 4.2, about 18% routes have been awarded to the northeast. A Rs 500 crore corpus has been dedicated to the air-connectivity of the northeast. Under Krishi UDAN, 25 airports have been incentivised in the region.

Minister announced that under International UDAN, two new routes Agartala-Chittagong-Agartala and Imphal-Mandalay-Imphal will be operationalised which will expand the scope of air connectivity in the north-eastern states from national to the international level.

Dr Singh said that it is matter of great pleasure that this additional air connectivity is being provided for the north-eastern region of the country. It will facilitate the travel between the states and help people traveling for various purposes and contribute to the growth of the region.

Tourism could address unemployment in NE: NEC secretary

Tourism has the potential for income generation in North Eastern states, NEC secretary K Moses Chalai said.

“Tourism can offer the potential for income generation in Northeastern states. Income generation continues to be a huge area of concern despite massive infrastructural development here,” the North Eastern Council secretary said, addressing a roundtable discussion on ‘Developing a Framework for Seamless Tourist Movements to North Eastern States of India’.

The two-day round table discussion was organised by a policy research centre at the IIM-Shillong.
The NEC secretary said ‘Off-road’ tourism has immense potential in the North Eastern Region and could be exploited for attracting tourists.

IIM-Shillong Director Prof DP Goyal emphasized on the need to work at the grassroots to understand the challenges involved in developing a framework for seamless tourist movement.

He said, “We need to have dynamic, integrated portals providing upto-date data to help tourists travel seamlessly across the North Eastern Region.

Policy research centre coordinator Sanjeev K Ningombam highlighted the lack of data tracking of tourist and their overall contribution to the economy.(Source East Mojo)
