Mumbai airport begins domestic to domestic transfer facility at T2

Domestic passengers landing at Terminal 2 (T2 ) in Mumbai and booked to board domestic connecting flights from the same terminal can now transit from within the terminal. Prior to this, such transit passengers landing in Mumbai had to exit T2 at the arrivals and then re-enter through the entry point at departures to board the connecting flight. “The dedicated space has pre-embarkation security checks.

This transfer area will considerably cut down the minimum connection time (MCT) for transfer passengers and crew members, thereby helping passengers with a shorter time gap between connecting flights as they will now be able to reach domestic departure concourse without undergoing the process of re-entering the terminal building,” said Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which introduced the facility recently. “Besides, it will add flexibility to the airline operatorsin planning their flight schedule and rostering of crew members as they will now be able to accommodate passengers with a lesser time interval between their connecting flights,” it added.

For instance, a passenger booked on an Air India Udaipur-Mumbai-Hyderabad flight, who has through checked-in bags, will land into Mumbai-T2 around 6pm and then from within T2transfer to the departures to board AI-619 for Hyderabad that departs at 8. 10pm. Even if the first flight is delayed and lands in Mumbai, say around 7 pm, with the transfer now available from within the terminal, the passenger could still hope to make it on time for the next leg. Domestic-to-domestic transfer from within the terminal is also available at T1. Domestic-to-domestic trans-fer from T1 to T2 or vice versa is done after exiting the terminal building concerned. The airport operates interterminal coaches that ply between these terminals at regular intervals which ferries transit passengers free of cost.

At T2, international to domestic transfer from within the terminal is available, but domestic to international transfer is not available — domestic arrival passengers booked to fly international have to exit and then re-enter at departures for check-in and immigration process. “The new domestic-to-domestic transfer facility at T2 is designed to provide passengers with a more efficient and seamless transfer process, faster processing times, and direct access to the departure concourse,” said the MIAL spokesperson. “With domestic travel on the rise and summer travel booking seeing a surge, this dedicated space would benefit passengers to travel faster, smoother, and more conveniently,” the official added. Mumbai airport registered 59% growth in passenger traffic in July

Higher domestic flight capacity and easing of travel restrictions locally have accelerated passenger traffic with Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) registered a 59% increase in it in July as compared to June. Officials said approximately 1.1 million passengers flew on at least 1,400 domestic and international destinations from Mumbai last month.

A Mumbai airport spokesperson said approximately 500,000 passengers travelled over 4,000 plus flights during the weekends alone in July. In June, 300,000 passengers travelled on 2,700 plus flights during the weekends.

Looking at the surge in passenger traffic and easing of travel restrictions, CSMIA reintroduced flights to Bareilly, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Ajmer and Porbandar.

“The gradual opening of offices is complemented with an increase in the flight capacity, which has been the other factor for sequential growth from CSMIA. Weekends saw a majority of passengers travelling to Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad destinations from CSMIA in the domestic sector and Doha, Newark and Dubai destinations in the international sector,” the spokesperson said.

According to the rating agency ICRA, July 2021 witnessed a 132% year-on-year growth in domestic passenger traffic as Covid-19 cases continued to dip during the month. Domestic passenger traffic also grew around 56-57% (at around 4.8-4.9 million) in July, compared to around 3.1 million in June. According to ICRA, the airlines’ capacity deployment last month was around 90% higher than in July 2020. There were around 47,200 departures in July this year against 24,770 departures in the same month last year. (Source HT)
