Pushkar Fair concludes with fanfare

The iconic Pushkar Fair 2024 concluded on Kartik Purnima with a grand ceremony and religious rituals led by Rajasthan’s Deputy Chief Minister, Diya Kumari. Highlighting its cultural significance, she announced an ambitious plan to develop Pushkar along the lines of Kashi-Vishwanath and Ayodhya. The initiative aims to blend modern amenities with the region’s spiritual heritage, enhancing its appeal as a top pilgrimage and cultural destination.

During the closing event, Diya Kumari emphasised the beautification of Pushkar Lake and its ghats, along with plans to improve facilities for visitors. She reiterated that Pushkar’s importance transcends Rajasthan, holding spiritual significance for the entire nation. The government intends to promote tourism and host more cultural events to attract domestic and international audiences while uplifting the local community.

This year’s fair recorded over 620,000 attendees, including 20,000 foreign tourists—the highest since 2019. The influx reflects the growing popularity of Pushkar and the effectiveness of tourism policies. Diya Kumari commended the administration’s efforts in creating a safe and welcoming environment for visitors, ensuring the event’s grand success.

The fair’s renowned animal trade brought over 8,000 livestock this year, providing vital economic opportunities for farmers. Known globally for its vibrant displays, the mela ground showcased Rajasthan’s traditions with decorated camels, traditional carts, and captivating cultural events like tug-of-war and pot races. Foreign tourists marveled at these colorful scenes, preserving them through their cameras.

Looking ahead, the Central and Rajasthan governments will collaborate on a comprehensive development plan for Pushkar. Diya Kumari stressed the importance of maintaining its cultural essence while improving the quality of life for locals. Expressing gratitude to all contributors, she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making Pushkar a premier destination for faith and tourism.
