The Maharashtra Assembly has passed a resolution to rename Pune’s Lohegaon Airport as ‘Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Airport.’ Proposed by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar under Rule 110, the resolution aims to honor the revered 17th-century saint and spiritual leader.
The resolution, approved by the Maharashtra Cabinet, will now be forwarded to the Civil Aviation Ministry for final approval. The renaming reflects the state’s effort to celebrate its cultural heritage and pay tribute to one of its most iconic figures.
Sant Tukaram Maharaj is widely revered for his spiritual contributions and teachings that resonate with millions. Renaming the airport in his honor is seen as a symbolic gesture to acknowledge his legacy while fostering pride in Maharashtra’s cultural roots.
Once cleared by the Centre, the renaming is expected to give Pune’s airport a distinctive identity, highlighting the region’s rich history while connecting travellers to its cultural significance.
