Prayagraj Airport gears up for Mahakumbh-2025 with night landings & increased flights

Prayagraj Airport is set to welcome a surge in pilgrims and visitors for the Mahakumbh-2025 with new developments, including night landing facilities and an increased number of flights.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced on Saturday that the airport will commence night flight operations ahead of the mega religious event, held once every 12 years.

To facilitate night landings, a CAT-II Instrument Landing System (ILS) has been installed, enabling operations even in low visibility conditions. This upgrade aims to accommodate the vast number of pilgrims traveling to Prayagraj from across India and the world.

Enhanced Facilities for Travellers
The airport has significantly expanded its infrastructure to meet the growing demand:
Aircraft Parking Bays: Increased from 4 to 15 to accommodate more flights.
Terminal Capacity: Passenger handling capacity enhanced from 350 to 850 at a time.
Car Parking: Expanded capacity from 200 to 400 vehicles.

The construction of a new terminal building is in its final phase, with completion expected by December 31, 2024. This new terminal is set to provide a modern and spacious environment for passengers.

Airlines Encouraged to Increase Flights
Minister Kinjarapu urged airlines to boost their flight schedules during the Mahakumbh to meet anticipated demand. “All airlines have been informed to increase flights for the convenience of pilgrims and air passengers,” he said while addressing media at the Prayagraj Airport.

Regional Connectivity Under UDAN
Highlighting the government’s commitment to making air travel accessible to the common man, Kinjarapu credited the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for enhancing regional air connectivity.

Review of Construction Progress
During his visit, the minister, accompanied by senior officials, inspected ongoing construction at the airport. Officials reported that two phases of the new terminal project have been completed, with the final phase nearing completion. Kinjarapu expressed satisfaction with the progress and emphasised the need for seamless coordination with state and regulatory authorities to ensure timely approvals.

These developments mark a significant leap in Prayagraj Airport’s readiness to accommodate the influx of travellers for Mahakumbh-2025, promising a smoother and more efficient travel experience for all.
