The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has invited Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy to speak on global tourism development and its linkages to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), at the United Nations headquarters next week.
Reddy will speak at the United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF), which is being held in New York between July 10 and 14. The UN HLPF is themed around “Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels”. Reddy’s address at the UN headquarters will be on July 13-14, as the G-20 Tourism Chair.
Acknowledging the role of tourism in economies and societies worldwide, as evidenced by the Covid-19 pandemic, the discussions and meetings will bring together top political and industry leaders to discuss how to accelerate the efforts of the tourism sector towards the SDGs, officials said. The implementation of the ‘India Declaration’ and ‘Goa Road Map’ that were finalised during the Ministerial Meeting in Goa are aimed at achieving SDGs and deepening partnerships and collaborations among countries and stakeholders, they added.
The HLPF is the central United Nations platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and SDGs at the global level. The participants will discuss inclusive recovery measures to address the impacts of the pandemic on SDGs and explore policy guidance for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, officials said.
