The Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) has launched a bid to elevate Kerala’s status as a premier cruise tourism destination. Inviting expressions of interest (EoI) from qualified firms, the initiative aims to establish comprehensive coastal cruise services connecting major and non-major ports within the state to neighbouring ports on both the west and east coasts, and even international destinations.
With a coastline spanning approximately 590 kilometers along the west coast, Kerala is poised to capitalize on its natural assets. The network of inland waterways, lakes, and rivers in the backwaters enhances the appeal for tourists seeking unique coastal experiences.
Kerala currently boasts one major port in Kochi and four non-major ports — Azhikkal, Beypore, Kollam, and Vizhinjam — all equipped with International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code certification. Vizhinjam, in particular, has already hosted over 20 foreign cruise vessels since 2009, signalling growing international interest.
The initiative aims to diversify cruise offerings, including deep sea and international cruises, domestic inter-state and intra-state services, river and marine cruises connecting inland waterways and islands, and specialty cruises such as day cruises and MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions).
While current incentives for coastal cruises are limited, the KMB remains receptive to industry feedback for developing a robust action plan to propel the project forward. This proactive approach underscores Kerala’s commitment to unlocking the potential of cruise tourism and showcasing its cultural and natural riches to a global audience.
