The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is set to transform travel between Mumbai and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) with the launch of electric ferry services in January 2025. Designed to provide a faster, more comfortable, and eco-friendly commute, these ferries will reduce travel time to just 30-40 minutes, cutting up to 20 minutes compared to current services. Passengers can look forward to air-conditioned seating and a smoother ride, ensuring convenience and comfort.
This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s “Harit Sagar” or “Green Port” plan, introduced by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPS&W). The project is part of India’s push towards sustainable transport and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2047 while boosting renewable energy use by 60%. Electric ferries are a crucial step towards greener port operations and reducing the carbon footprint of marine transport.
The ferries, made of durable fibre-reinforced polymer material, are 12 meters long, capable of speeds up to 12 knots, and can accommodate 20-24 passengers. They will operate two routes: Gateway of India to JNP during the regular season and Bhaucha Dhakka to JNP in the foul season, ensuring year-round reliability. Features like online ticketing and seamless check-in will enhance the travel experience, improving connectivity and boosting trade and tourism in the region.
This pioneering project underscores India’s commitment to sustainable development. By offering a quiet, efficient, and pollution-free alternative, the electric ferries will redefine urban mobility and set a benchmark for eco-friendly transportation in the country.
