The inaugural interactive session between the Indian Embassy in China and Indian students impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded on May 4. China’s visa restrictions resulted in prolonged academic disruptions for these students.
Dubbed the “welcome and interaction ceremony,” the event was spearheaded by Indian Ambassador to China Pradeep Kumar Rawat and Counsellor Nitinjeet Singh. Over 80 students, both current and former, representing more than 13 Chinese universities, participated.
Amit Sharma, Second Secretary (Education), delivered an in-depth presentation outlining the range of services provided by the Embassy, along with essential guidelines for the students.
Before the pandemic, approximately 23,000 Indian students were enrolled in Chinese universities, but this number has dwindled to around 10,000 presently. Chinese medical universities have historically been favored by Indian students seeking higher education opportunities abroad.
Following the outbreak of Covid-19 in China in early 2020, most Indian students returned home amidst stringent lockdown measures. However, due to China’s visa bans and restrictions, many were unable to resume their studies until 2023. The return of students commenced in late 2022, coinciding with Chinese universities’ intake of new students.
Throughout the visa restrictions, the Embassy actively engaged with Chinese authorities to facilitate the early return of students, recognising the adverse impact of the delays on their academic pursuits.
Students were reminded to exercise caution and adhere strictly to local laws. Recent reports indicate that three Indian students are currently detained in China on criminal charges.
