Heritage Luxury: THE Lotus Palace Chettinad

Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels Limited (ASPHL) launches THE Lotus Palace Chettinad, a heritage hotel under THE Park Collection brand, located in Kanadukathan near Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. A restored 17th-century architectural gem, the palace reflects the Chettiar legacy of the region, known as the “Land of the Chettiars.” This restoration merges original Chettinad architectural elements, such as Burmese teak wood doors and Sahasradala Padma-inspired courtyards, with contemporary design, enhancing Chettinad’s charm as a heritage travel destination.

THE Lotus Palace features 15 luxury rooms with an eclectic blend of antique furnishings and vibrant interiors, such as turquoise green and traditional “athangudi” tiles. The on-site Chettinad Thali restaurant, 86 Pillars, celebrates the region’s renowned cuisine, with specialties like Kaalan Keti Kuzhambu and a complete Chettinad Thali experience. Unique accents include stained glass panels influenced by Raja Ravi Verma, paying homage to the palace’s cultural significance as a historic venue for Ramayan recitals.

Guests can enjoy 1795, a bar with Asian-inspired bites and a signature cocktail menu, seamlessly flowing to Aqua, a poolside lounge ideal for relaxation. Exclusive to in-house guests, the Red Room is a sanctuary adorned in red Burmese lacquer, featuring a high tea experience, games, and reading materials. This private space connects to The Library, with views of the village street below, offering a blend of heritage and contemporary leisure.

The luxury spa, Aura, provides tranquil therapy rooms with signature treatments using natural products, while the Sunset Terrace offers panoramic views of the surrounding village as evening sets in. Architect Kaushik Mukherjee was tasked with preserving the essence of a traditional Chettinad home, creating an authentic yet luxurious experience.

Priya Paul, Chairperson, ASPHL, expressed pride in merging Chettinad’s age-old traditions with modern luxury, providing a unique cultural experience for global travellers. Managing Director Vijay Dewan emphasised the significance of THE Lotus Palace in expanding the brand’s heritage luxury portfolio and in supporting regional tourism. This addition enhances THE Park’s presence in Tamil Nadu, alongside THE Park Chennai, underscoring the brand’s commitment to preserving India’s diverse heritage.
