Health authorities have issued an advisory addressing potential health challenges linked to Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) and other respiratory viruses amid a surge in cases in China. Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the Centre to act promptly, emphasising lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Delhi health officials, led by Vandana Bagga, convened to assess preparedness for managing respiratory illnesses. Hospitals have been instructed to follow strict isolation protocols for suspected cases and maintain detailed records of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and influenza cases. Stockpiles of essential medicines, including paracetamol and bronchodilators, have been mandated.
While reports indicate a rise in respiratory illnesses in China, Indian health agencies like the IDSP and NCDC, alongside the WHO, have stated there is no significant surge in India as of January 2, 2025. Citizens have been advised to take routine precautions for respiratory diseases.
HMPV, often compared to Covid-19 due to its similar transmission and symptoms, primarily affects the respiratory system. While it generally causes mild symptoms such as cough or wheezing, it can lead to severe complications in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
The Delhi government has issued a public advisory, emphasising early containment measures to prevent HMPV from escalating into a public health crisis. Kejriwal highlighted the importance of vigilance and proactive action to address the situation effectively.
