Air trains worldwide are typically free for passengers, offering seamless transit between airport terminals. The cost of upgrading airport infrastructure is recovered through aeronautical charges like landing and parking fees for airlines, as well as User Development Fees (UDF) charged to passengers.
In a recent tender, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) outlined plans to implement an Automated People Mover (APM) system. This elevated and at-grade system will follow the design, build, finance, operate, and transfer (DBFOT) model.
The APM system is designed to offer fast, reliable connectivity between Terminal 1 and Terminals 2 and 3, enhancing passenger convenience and helping reduce the airport’s carbon footprint. This project is a key step in improving airport infrastructure and sustainability.
Delhi’s first air train, expected to be operational by late 2027, is projected to cost around INR 2,000 crore. It will connect Terminal 1 with Terminals 2 and 3 at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), further streamlining transit for passengers.
