Bihar approves land acquisition to expand Darbhanga, Raxaul airports

The Bihar Cabinet has approved acquisition of an additional 89.75 acres of land for expansion and development of the Darbhanga airport into an international one.

The Council of Ministers also gave its nod for acquisition of 139 acres of land worth Rs 207 crore for the expansion of Raxaul airport in the state, an official said.

These decisions were taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Patna.

Talking to reporters soon after the meeting, Additional Chief Secretary S Siddharth said, “The cabinet approved a proposal for the acquisition of 89.75 acres of land worth Rs 244.60 crore for the development and expansion of the existing Darbhanga airport into an international airport. The state government will pay the amount to the owners of the land… land will be transferred to the Airport Authority of India for the project”.

The development and expansion of the existing Darbhanga airport will improve air connectivity and benefit the people of the entire Mithila region and other surrounding areas, he added.

Earlier, the state government had transferred 76.85 acres of land to the AAI in 2024 for the development of Darbhanga airport, including the new civil enclave, which will cover 52 acres.

Key features of the project include a terminal building, cargo complex, multi-level car parking, fire station and other related structures.

“The Cabinet also approved the acquisition of 139 acres of land worth INR 207 crore for the expansion of Raxaul airport in the state,” he said.

The Raxaul airport will be developed by the AAI, he said, adding this will improve economic activities in the state.

The Cabinet also gave its nod for the acquisition of 1243.45 acres of land for the development of industrial parks in Vaishali district for Rs 1001.92 crore, 504.52 acres in Sitamarhi for Rs 298.77 crore and the transfer of 29.30 acres in Chanpatia in West Champaran, he said.
Besides, cabinet approval for the sanction of Rs 2,960.48 crore was also granted for the construction of several new developmental/infrastructural projects recently announced by the CM during his ‘Pragati Yatra’ in several districts in the state, Siddharth said.

“A proposal of the state transport department for the installation of CCTV and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras at 72 important crossings in 26 districts in the state was also approved by the Cabinet.

Installation of such cameras will check traffic violations in these districts”, he said.

Navi Mumbai Airport to start domestic operations in April

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to start domestic operations in April this year, while international operations will start a month after its inauguration in May.

Earlier on December 29, the airport conducted its first flight test. During the test, an IndiGo A320 passenger aircraft landed successfully at runway 26/08 of the airport, paving the way for securing an aerodrome licence to start commercial operations.

The facility will have two runways and four terminals with a capacity to cater to 90 million passengers per annum once all five phases of the project are completed. The first and second phases will have one runway and one terminal building. The subsequent phases 3, 4, and 5 will introduce a second runway, four additional terminals, and an increased passenger capacity of 90 million.

 

 

Tuticorin Airport new terminal & runway extension to be completed by year end

The Tuticorin Airport in Tamil Nadu is undergoing major upgradation, which includes extending the runway for operation of A-321 type aircraft, building a new apron, terminal building, technical block-cum-control tower, and fire station at a cost of INR 381 crore.

M. Suresh, Chairman, AAI, visited the Tuticorin airport project site on Saturday and reviewed the ongoing upgradation works. He said the terminal and runway extension work will be completed by December.

Spread over an area of 17,500 sq m, the airport’s new terminal building will serve 1,440 passengers during peak hours and 20 lakh passengers annually. The new building will be equipped with all the modern facilities and passenger amenities, including three aerobridges, says a release issued by the Tuticorin Airport.

The airport development project also includes an extension of the existing runway from 1350 m to 3,115 m, making the airport suitable for the operation of A-321 type of aircraft. Construction of new ATC tower cum technical block, fire station, extension of apron for parking of five Airbus-321 type of aircraft, isolation bay. Link Taxi track and Part Parallel Taxi Track is also part of the project.

The airport is currently connected to Chennai and Bengaluru, with six daily flights. It is capable of serving 156 passengers during peak hours, three lakh passengers annually, and handling ATR types of aircraft.

MoD, DGCA approve original site for Purandar Airport

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Directorate General of Civic Aviation (DGCA) have approved the proposed airport at the original site in Purandar, Pune, clearing all technical hurdles for the project, said MoS Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol.

According to Mohol, while MoD gave the green signal in May 2024, he got to know about DGCA approval for airport project on Saturday morning, reports Hindustan Times.

“With the approvals, about 99 per cent technical issues related to the proposed airport has been addressed and the next step is land acquisition,” he said, adding that he will take it up with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), DGCA, and Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC).

On the Pune airport runway expansion and starting of new terminal, Mohol said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already cleared Central Industrial Security Force’s (CISF) proposal to allot 241 personnel for the new terminal building.

“For bigger aircraft of D and E type to fly from Pune airport, we need to expand the runway for which 35 acres is needed. Plan will be made to allocate fund for land acquisition from the state government, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations,” he said.

While C-type aircraft have size between 24 to 36 metres, D is 36-52 metre and E in the range of 52 to 65 metres.
Mohol said, “The launch of new terminal building was awaited due to approval for CISF personnel. Amit Shah has assured me to allot manpower at the earliest.”

 

Modi lays foundation stone for new terminal building at Tiruchirappalli Airport

In a push for ‘Sabka Vikas’ south of the Vindhyas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a bouquet of development projects worth over INR 20,000 crore in Tiruchirappalli.
PM Modi later proceeded to inaugurate the new terminal building at the Trichy airport.

The new terminal building has been developed at a cost of more than INR 1,100 crore. The two-level new international terminal has the capacity to serve more than 44 lakh passengers annually and about 3,500 during peak hours, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) informed earlier through an official release.

“The new terminal hosts state-of-the-art amenities and features for passenger convenience,” read the PMO statement.

Tiruchirappalli International Airport is the second-largest airport in terms of international passenger traffic after Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

Surat Airport starts domestic flights; to launch international services soon

Within nine days of its opening, the Surat International Airport commenced domestic operations from its newly opened terminal with the arrival of two flights from Delhi and Hyderabad on Monday.

Indigo operated the initial flights connecting Surat to Delhi and Hyderabad, marking the beginning of a significant chapter in the airport’s operational history. Air connectivity is key for unlocking economic growth potential, as it attracts business investment and human capital.

“The first flight arrived from Delhi with 177 passengers on board and departed back with 161 passengers. Similarly, the second flight arrived from Hyderabad with 180 passengers and departed with almost an equal number of passengers from Surat,” the Airport officials mentioned.

Furthermore, an Air India Express flight to Dubai is scheduled for departure today. The occasion was marked with a ceremonial lamp lighting ceremony, attended by Surat Airport director Rupesh Kumar, airport staff, and airline officials.

“There was a need for a big airport. It was a long-awaited demand. The Prime Minister inaugurated the terminal on December 17. Today, we are starting the new terminal after cake cutting by the new passenger,” Rupesh Kumar, Director, Surat Airport said.

At present, Surat is connected to more than 14 domestic cities like Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Goa, Goa Mopa, Pune, Diu, Indore, Udaipur Belgaum, Jaipur and Kishangarh while Internationally it is connected to destinations like Sharjah.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Surat Airport as an International Airport on December 15, 2023.

On December 17, PM Modi inaugurated the new integrated terminal building of Surat International Airport. The new terminal aims to strengthen seamless infrastructure for one of the most dynamic cities of India known for its booming Textile industry. The city is also globally well renowned for its cutting and polishing of diamonds.

Built for INR 353 crore, the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) is spread across an area of 25,520 sqm and is equipped to serve 1,200 domestic passengers and 600 International passengers during peak hours and 35 lakhs annually. Further, passenger facilities like 20 check-in counters, five conveyor belts, and 500 car parking slots for passenger convenience have been provided at NITB.

To cater to the rapidly increasing influx of passengers, the Terminal building has provision for increasing the capacity to 3,000 passengers during peak hours with annual serving capacity.

The terminal building has been designed with its local culture and heritage ensuring that the essence should reflect both in interior and exterior, creating a sense of place for the visitors.
